Tianjin University of Science and Technology (TUST), formerly known as Tianjin Institute of Light Industry, was founded in 1958 in Tianjin, the cradle of modern industry of China and received its current name in 2002.For fifty years, Tianjin University of Science and Technology has adhered to the principle of pursuing science, truth and practicality, striving to fulfill its responsibilities for the society and the motherland. TUST has not only cultivated a large number of talents, but also made many scientific achievements which are closely related to the need of the people’s daily life. The university has made great contributions to the economic and social development in Tianjin and China. Tianjin University of Science and Technology has made an objective analysis of the international situations and its own past and present, and taken a series of major strategic measures, including the founding of its TEDA campus, strengthening its strategy of improving itself through talents, intensifyingefforts to construct its disciplines, and improving its education and teaching quality.

Tinajin University of Science and Technology is jointly constructed by the central government of China and the local government of Tianjin and mainly administered by the latter.? It is a key comprehensive university in Tianjin, with balanced disciplined ranging from industry and science to art, economy, management and laws. The university offers a whole range of degree programs in bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Ever since it’s founding, it has been authorized to take international students. TUST also cultivates backup military officers for the army.The university has three campuses – Downtown Campus, TEDA Campus, and Tang’gu Campus. TEDA Campus is located in Tianjin Economic and Technological Development Area – the center of Tianjin New Coastal Area, the third pole of economic growth of China. The university covers an area of one million square meters, including a building area of over 500,000 square meters. Its teaching equipment is worth 164 million RMB Yuan. Covering 26,000 square meters, its library stores over 1.4 million books and 3000 kinds of magazines. The university has more than 18,000 registered students.TUST has a mobile postdoctoral center of light industry technology and engineering and a mobile postdoctoral center of Tianjin municipal food processing engineering. TUST offers 11 doctoral programs, 39 master programs, 10 master programs of engineering, 4 on-job master programs for university teachers, and 62 undergraduate programs. There is an MOE engineering research center, 6 provincial key disciplines, 6 provincial key labs, research centers and industry technology centers.The university has a faculty of 1560, including 269 master and doctoral candidate supervisors. More than 500 faculty are with senior professional technological titles, including members of disciplinary assessment group of the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council, candidates for the national talent program for the new century, young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions at the state level, excellent talents of the Ministry of Education, special professors of Tianjin, honored experts of Tianjin, experts enjoying the special allowances from the State Council, special “Haihe Scholars” professors, etc.The university has undertaken 221 key projects at the national or province level, including key and major national projects supported by the Eleventh Five-year Plan, projects of the “863” Program at the state level, Fok Ying Tung Education Fund project, etc. It has won 69 national awards for its scientific and technological progress, and has more than 10,000 papers published.The university regards improving education quality as its lifeline and pays due respect to the students’ needs. It attaches great importance to improving the students’ all-round quality, and organizes various cultural activities on the campus and practices in the society. For many times, the university has won honors from the national Challenge Cup contest of creation and business incubation for college students, and English and Mathematics contests for Chinese college students.The university adheres to its principle of offering open education. It has invited well-known experts and scholars from home and abroad to deliver lectures, and carry out research of cooperation projects in science and technology. Apart from this, the university has established academic relations with over 40 colleges and research institutions in the USA, Japan, U.K., France, Russia, Australia, Canada, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Korea, etc. The education programs of international cooperation have been expanded and improved in both scale and level. Every year, the university sends excellent undergraduates to study abroad for international exchange.
